Citizen Congress Watch April 10th Fundraiser: Fundraising for local council monitoring efforts, publishing of ‘Handbook of Council Monitoring’
Citizen Congress Watch CEO OOO states that the 2022 regional election, set to be held in November is part of a crucial stage of democratization in Taiwan. Voters should vote responsibly as ‘political consumers’ and review each candidate’s performance and transparency as voting indicators. To foster responsible voting, Citizen Congress Watch compiled relevant information, including councilor performance indicators and Council reform pledges, into one ‘Handbook of Council Monitoring’. This handbook is made in the hopes of equipping concerned citizens against corruption in local councils.
Citizen Congress Watch combined our efforts with other civil society-led monitoring groups of local councils and established a nationwide alliance with 14 other groups in 12 counties and cities. Until now, we have initiated 4 major probes on council transparency, meetings are regularly held to review the performance of local councils. We believe that efforts from civil society are necessary for maintaining the quality of governance and preventing corruption in local legislative bodies. While complete removal of misconduct is impossible, civil efforts act as a crucial deterrence. Constant civil monitoring of both the Congress and local councils ensures democratic accountability and transparency, propelling democratic consolidation forward in Taiwan.
